explore which guitar lessons will work for you
Each student is unique, in terms of his or her age, degree of musical knowledge and skill, stylistic interests, and style of learning. Private guitar lessons provide the opportunity to create a personalized approach to learning for each student.

learn to play by ear or how to read sheet musicThe first lesson begins with an interview and some guitar playing, so that Joseph may assess the student’s playing level and musical knowledge. Then we discuss the student’s interests and goals. Based on these we form a course of study tailored to the individual. In addition to guitar technique and songs, this course may include songwriting, performance skills, ear training, music theory, note and tablature reading, guitar theory, and instruction on how to practice.

pick your favorite songs to learn to playJoseph uses repertoire (learning songs) as the primary vehicle for learning guitar technique. Students may bring CDs of their favorite music to lessons, or choose from the many transcriptions and recordings that Joseph has available. In both cases the music is chosen to fulfill two goals: it should be interesting and inspiring to the student, and provide the student with the opportunity to learn something new, expanding his or her knowledge and skill. Joseph recommends that all children learn to read standard music notation as well as guitar tablature. Reading standard notation is equally important for adults who wish to study classical guitar or jazz, or to become professional musicians.
